Skin Testing

Identifying allergies is an important step in formulating a plan for treatment to help you start feeling better.  Your history and symptoms help determine what is tested.   Board certified allergists often use skin testing to identify allergens with minimal discomfort.

When you are skin tested, a nurse will place a small amount of allergen on the skin with a prick or scratch.   An area of itchy red swelling may develop at the site if you are allergic.   Dr. von Elten will read the results at the end of the waiting period, which is usually 15 minutes.   A second step may be recommended where the nurse injects a small amount of allergen into the skin followed by an additional 15-minute waiting period.   Dr. von Elten will discuss the results after the test is complete and review the options for treatment.   Together, you and she will determine the plan that is right for you.

Skin testing is available for airborne allergens and foods.
